mate: typical infusion, tea-like beverage popular in many South American countries specially in Argentina and Uruguay, brewed from the dried leaves of an evergreen shrub or tree (Ilex paraguariensis) related to holly made with yerba mate, a plant that grows only in the northern Argentine provinces of Misiones and Corrientes, southern Paraguay and Brazil.
